Planning - Research into genre (DANIEL)

Indie music is short for independent music, which refers to how the music is recorded and distributed. It was first used to describe how music was beginning to be distributed by labels other than Universal, Warner, Sony and EMI. Today, it's used a modifier term, with another genre added on to the end: indie pop, indie rock and indie alternative are examples.

One of the first instances of indie was the 1977 self-publication of the Spiral Scratch EP by the Manchester band Buzzcocks. It's been argued by the BBC and others that the publication of Spiral Scratch independently of a major label led to the coining of the name "indie".

Indie artists from across subgenres include: HalseyArcade FireNeutral Milk HotelMumford & Sons

Indie music is also one of the platforms people use to voice their opinions through music. Artists that are beginning to change the music industry via the indie genre include: Hayley Kiyoko, a WOC (woman of colour) who is using her music to raise awareness and normalise the LGBT+ community and Twenty One Pilots, whose songs are filled with religious symbolism and revolve around concepts such as mental health and the power of the individual.
